Return of the sun

It has been dark and gloomy here in Maastricht for the entire month of July.
Today, the sun came out for the first time in weeks – literally.
And it was glorious.
Maastricht – with its mix of German, Dutch and French people and languages, with its history and architecture and lifestyle influenced by the Spanish, the tourists and the river and the Medieval churches – is at its best when it’s hot and dry. Maastricht, it becomes clear every summer, is really not so much part of the cool Northern Netherlands – it is rather a lost little piece of the Mediterranean, more European than Dutch, and just improbably beautiful.
