Soldier down

Summer is back: Maastricht is 30°C hot and super stuffy today. And I am just as miserable. You should consider yourself extremely lucky if you don’t suffer from allergies in the summer. It is a PAIN. If you’re like me, it consumes your entire life for about five months straight. It sucks the fun out of everything and it turns you into a whiny, sickly, pitiful bitch. I am allergic to everything from grass pollen to blossoming hazelnut trees; no one really knows why and how and where the line is drawn. In fact, it has often crossed over into fruit like strawberries as well. It’s what my childhood doctor referred to as cross-over allergies. It is also what made him frown with concern. See, my allergies, it turns out, are too diverse to treat for a specific cause (as I imagine you could if you’re allergic to, say, latex or dog hair), and so I just suffer through it every year with some basic medication that suppresses the worst of it.

I mostly try to play it down. The thing with allergies is that no one gives a shit. It’s not an impressive open wound or anything. People who are not similarly afflicted generally seem to think that allergies make you sneeze more often, and that’s that. But THESE PEOPLE COULD NOT BE MORE WRONG. Right now, I am fighting a numb head, a runny nose, itchy eyes, abnormal pressure on both ears and a throat that appears to be on fire. It’s worst in the mornings but carries on throughout the day; every day, for five months. I can feel that my whole body is fighting something with every fiber of its being. I’m constantly tired and tingly and on the verge of, yes, sneezing. It really is a great deal of fun! Sigh.

In other news: new theme! It’s not as minimalistic and cutesy as the old one and allows me to post photos in bigger sizes. And I love how the subpages turned out! I even updated the About, Travel and Links pages so go check them out, especially if you’re a fairly new reader.

I’ll go soak in my own misery and self-pity for a bit! See you soon!

  1. I FEEL YA on the allergies!!!! Except…I have never had them before so I feel all WHAT IS HAPPENING!!!!

I LOVE LOVE the new theme and honestly want one just like it, except the EmmySuh version.

  2. I am really lucky that I don’t have any allergies, but my sister does and she says the same thing that you do: it’s basically walking around with a huge head-cold all summer. It’s annoying and painful and just NO FUN. I am so, so sorry.

    Nora.

  4. You know, I am actually fairly lucky in that allergies mostly make me sneeze more and sometimes make my head feel a bit stuffy (and eyes itchy) but that’s it.
